About the Author
Sandra Pesmen,
Beyond Brenda Starr... The prospects weren't bright for the recently orphaned, 20-year-old who graduated with a degree from the University of Illinois College of Journalism in 1952. Guys were reporters, writers, Hemingways-in-Training. Gals, if they were dreamers, were for the most part in post-War media circles, food or fashion writers.
So it's no surprise that no one thought Sandra Pesmen would one-day interview celebrities like John Travolta, Woody Allen, Joan Rivers, Harry Belafonte, Ron Howard, Lena Horne, Elliot Gould and Donald Sutherland—and so many others, en route to becoming a:
- Two-time author and motivational speaker
- Reporter/feature writer for a leading Chicago newspaper
- Founding features editor for Crain's Chicago Business
- Founder and blogger for the Website: WidowsList.com; and
- Member of The Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame
Yet Pesmen made her mark: chronicling and living a red-carpet days, suburban nights life, while married to the same man for 56 years and rearing a loving family with him. Her memoir, poignant, witty and wicked-smart, offers tips for women in the media, to be sure. But at its heart, her journey offers lasting lessons about life, career and love to us all.
"Sandy Pesmen wrote a memoir that's a keeper—and hilarious to boot." — Geoff Hansen, Asst. Director, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Phenomenon, Rent, National Treasure 1 & 2
"Such a treat to relive those exciting times. What a great and interesting life you've lived. I'm glad and proud to be a part of it." — Rance Crain, President, Crain Communications; Editor-in-Chief: Advertising Age, Crain's Chicago Business, Crain's New York Business, TelevisionWeek
